Chapter Four
âMarci, I need to make a call.â
Marshall was fixinâ to tear someone or someones a new asshole, and he was just going to start at the top.
âSure.â Her impassive expression never changed. âThe pay phone out of business?â
âNo, but you donât want me using it in the store. Can I bum your cell? Iâll pay you for minutes.â
âOkay, but no farther than the picnic table out back with it.â
âMarci.â He put a twenty on the counter. âYou know me.â
âThe picnic table.â She scowled, suddenly impressively intimidating like the werebear she was. âI know you when you get mad.â
âYeah, yeah.â He took her sleek little smartphone and headed out back, knowing Ben and Jakob would meet him. Jakob refused to let go of Ben, freaking out that they had to leave home so soon.
He heard the truck door shut as he sat, dialing Stephen from memory, willing his Alpha to answer the strange number.
âHello?â Stephen barked out the greeting. âThis had better be Marshall.â
âIt is.â
âYou finally get a phone?â
âNope. Borrowed. Got a question.â Marshall felt his anger boiling up in his chest.
âI got an answer.â
Marshall sure as shit hoped so. âWhy did someone have our mate Jakob sent to some pray-the-wolf-away cult?â
There was a long silence, then, âCome again?â
Benâs hand landed on his shoulder and Jakob sat pressed against his side.
âYou heard me. Jakob is alive. He went to Granny, and she sent him here. He was darted. The fucking scars, Steve. Someone hurt our mate.â
âWhat? Jakob? Your Jakob? Are you serious?â The tone of Stephenâs voice was joyous, one of pure wonder. âHeâs alive?â
âHe showed up yesterday.â Was it just yesterday? âScarred and starved and beaten, Steve.â He couldnât believe Steve was in on this. Their friend was a terrible liar.
âWho? Who beat him? One of us? Iâll tear him limb from limb.â
âNo. He says the pack sent him away, though. He has letters. Emails from me and Ben.â
âSend me everything.â Stephenâs rage crackled along the phone line. âI want to know who fucking did this.â
âWilliam. Brother William.â Jakob spoke next to the phone and Stephen went silent.
âDoes he mean the wolf who came through? The one who stayed for a few weeks that spring?â
Jakob nodded. âBrother William.â
âGoddess. He -- he must have been culling what he thought were weaknesses. Iâll get Xeno on it, as well as Fallon.â
Fallon was Stephenâs secret weapon, and just the mention of his name gave Marsh a shiver. Guy was a dire freakinâ wolf.
âI want blood, Stephen.â
âI want you three to stay there, just in case theyâre looking for him. I want to know how he got free, because if they followed him, weâll have a problem. You said he came to your granny?â
âSister Abby said it was time to move on, to ask for forgiveness,â Jakob said. âSo I could go to the next level.â
âYou hear that, Boss?â Old habits died hard. Steve was the boss.
âI hear it, but it doesnât make sense. What level? What forgiveness? Why would they let him go after keeping him?â
Ben rumbled.
